A renovation of the owner's childhood home, reimagined for the family today. The client's envisioned a warm and inspiring home for their growing family that was child-centered and better equipped for play and exploration. Materiality is key to honoring the home's history. A double height hallway space envelopes the existing house, creating an interior bridge to the new addition. The existing shingles on the exterior of the old house were kept inside to emphasize the blend of modernity with the old. Materials such as rough-sawn lumber and salvaged old cherry create textural depth and history. The reclaimed materials soften the modern and warm the space. Opting for materials that would patina and change over time created a durable stage for their family story to unfold. The final project is about connection, unity, and play.
